In the drivers seat

I’m currently working as an employee, contracting in communications and building my own coaching business. I enjoy all of these things, but I want more for my daughter and me… and I’m about to launch a new version of my Purposeful Parenting Program.

You may not know this about me, but I used to be a cast driver on film productions. I’ve always been good at reading people. Not every dream deserves to be crafted into the written word, and I promise I have a point. This is about coaching.

Last night, I dreamt that I was driving Robert DeNiro. Our film location was somewhere in the far North West of Western Australia – The Kimberley Outback - where I currently live with soft dirt tracks. I had a converted racing 4WD with lots of additional gadgets. There was some confusion about the day’s film location, and Robert walked off down a track towards location – we’re in the outback, and it is far too hot to walk. I didn’t know what to do without the day’s call sheet (production paperwork). My Dad – remember this is a dream – jumped into the driver’s seat of my car, and I got into the passenger’s seat. He drove off in the opposite direction towards Broome’s seaport. I didn’t know what to do ,but then I suddenly asserted, “I’m the cast driver. I should be driving ,and I believe we are going the wrong way.” He pulled over and I hopped into the driver’s seat - oh, it feels good to write these words!

Turned out, it was simply a matter of asserting myself.

Next, as I’m in the driver’s seat – yes, I like writing this, so I’m saying it again – and Dad is at the door, he expresses his own worries about me working the gadgets. I think, “I should learn,” but I’m not doubtful. He showed me a small drop-down filter that magnified and clarified my view. It was amazing tech and I felt empowered in charge of a formidable vehicle. Seeing further meant I could go faster.

This is what coaching does for you.

It clarifies your vision so you can go faster. It supports you in refuting and rewriting any limiting beliefs you may have learned from your family or society that cause you to doubt yourself. (My Dad used to work at a port and my Dad always worries.) Coaching builds your confidence so you can speak up and go your own way.

In my coaching sessions, I can work with the practical realities of your life and be completely comfortable working with metaphors, including your dreams, and read your body language. All forms of communication are valid as input and can be returned in your preferred form.

If you’ve read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, you may have recognised the Shadow Artist in the role of cast driver. It’s absolutely true that despite the power of being in control of a supped-up vehicle, the actual lead in this dream is Robert DeNiro. And that role is waiting for me when I complete my communications and take charge of my coaching business.
